Brand new James Connolly-inspired scarves, featuring a section from his famous quote ‘The Irish people will only be free when they own everything from the plough to the stars”.
The culture and politics of 1930s Ireland was deeply hostile to socialist ideas. The emerging Free State government was determined to keep Ireland a conservative Catholic country and removed from ‘godless communism’. Unfortunately the trade union movement, for all intents and purposes, had forgotten the legacy of James Connolly, and his works were slowly disappearing from public access.
It was in this environment Connolly Books opened in 1932. Since then, we have printed and published a number of Connolly’s writings. Thousands of people first encountered Connolly through our various re-publications.
Today, we are glad to launch a new limited edition scarf, exclusive to Connolly Books, in collaboration with renowned artist Spicebag. Adam Doyle’s previous work has focused on a number of social issues including housing, Palestine solidarity, the promotion of the Irish language, among others.
