Earlier this year, the James Connolly Festival commissioned 8 artists, to create modern interpretations and portraits of the trade union leader as part of this year's James Connolly Festival. Encompassing printmaking, graphic design, illustration, graffiti and visual art disciplines, from artists across Ireland and beyond, the collection presented new and exciting interpretations of one of Ireland’s most famous economic and political thinkers.

“For my piece I will be using acrylic on canvas and plan on painting James Connolly in realism, whilst playing with some modern elements with the use of graffiti in the background. This use of graffiti will not be political or opinionated, but more so as a medium of abstract expression, one that I aim to use to contrast with the realistic way in which I will paint Connolly. Putting him in the foreground in harmony with the bold modern tags I incorporate into my own artwork.

“The colours I will be using will be earthy greens, and Connolly will be wearing an all black suit, to soften the sharp edges and possible harshness of the graffiti that will be surrounding him I will be incorporating some thistle's which will also be a nod to Connolly's Scottish roots.”
